Robert Kraft Cancels Macklemore from Ed Sheeran Gillette Stadium Show Over Hate Speech Policy

Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft canceled rapper Macklemore from Ed Sheeran's lineup, citing a policy against hate speech and discrimination.

Foxborough, Massachusetts — New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft—who also owns Gillette Stadium—said on Monday that he has cancelled rapper Macklemore's scheduled appearance as the opening act for singer Ed Sheeran's show later this month. According to Kraft, the reason is the stadium's "long-standing commitment to providing a welcoming environment for all visitors and ensuring that events held at our facilities do not become platforms for hate speech."

In a statement sent to ESPN, Kraft said, "Given Macklemore's recent actions, the content shared on stage during Ed Sheeran's show in New Jersey, and his history of antisemitic remarks and imagery—which we consider deeply offensive and hurtful to the Jewish community—we concluded that his participation in the September 25 and 26 shows at Gillette Stadium would cross the line."

During performances at MetLife Stadium on September 4 and 5, Macklemore expressed pro-Palestinian views on stage regarding the ongoing war in Gaza. He advocated for Palestinian freedom and performed his anti-war protest song "Hind's Hall," the lyrics of which describe Israel's actions in the region—to some extent—as "genocide."

Following the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Hamas-led militants from the Gaza Strip—which left approximately 1,200 people dead and 251 taken hostage—Israel launched a retaliatory offensive that has resulted in the deaths of thousands of Palestinians. Macklemore, 43, stated on social media on Monday that Sheeran told him Kraft would not allow him to perform at Gillette Stadium. Macklemore added that Sheeran told him Kraft had persuaded other stadium owners to make similar decisions, and as a result, he was dropped from the tour. Kraft, 85, who is of Jewish heritage, said his decision was not intended to "diminish the suffering of innocent Palestinians or to deny anyone the right to speak out for their cause."

"Their pain and loss are real," Kraft said in his statement. "But this advocacy should not come at the expense of the Jewish community or by obscuring the responsibility of Hamas—an organization designated as terrorist by the U.S. and nations worldwide (including Canada, the EU, the UK, and Japan). Hamas's heinous acts have caused immense suffering to both Palestinians and Israelis."

"I agree with Macklemore. Many lives have been lost and there has been great suffering; however, sharing only selective information while ignoring the actions of Hamas is not honest, and it only fuels further division and hatred. For decades, I have provided resources for Palestine and created opportunities in sports and entrepreneurship for Palestinians whom I respect and honor." "Supporting the Palestinian people and speaking out against Hamas, antisemitism, and hatred are not mutually exclusive." Earlier this month, Macklemore stated in New Jersey that his criticism was not directed at Jewish people.

He said, "To all my Jewish brothers and sisters: criticizing Israel, criticizing apartheid, and opposing genocide is in no way a criticism of you. This message is for peace, for love, and for treating all human beings with dignity, respect, and equality."

Kraft, who founded the 'Foundation to Combat Antisemitism' (later renamed the *Blue Square Alliance Against Hate*) in 2019, also said on Monday:

"I have dedicated most of my time and attention over the past decade to fighting antisemitism and hate in all its forms, and when I feel a line has been crossed, I feel a responsibility to speak up. I have great respect for Ed and his music—especially his unique ability to bring people together and spread joy—and I have always been proud to welcome him and his fans to Gillette Stadium."

"I would appreciate the opportunity to speak with Macklemore and discuss the facts, because ultimately, we share the same goal: peace for all, an end to suffering, and an end to hate in all its forms."

Shows on Sheeran's tour are scheduled for venues such as Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia; Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta; Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis; Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina; AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas; and Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
